Dr. Grace Hazeltine

Grace E. Hazeltine, Ph.D.

I tend to work best with people who prefer someone straight-forward, warm, and participatory. If you don’t know what kind of therapeutic fit would be best for you, that’s okay, too. A phone conversation is usually a good place to find out if we could have success working together.

I’m a licensed psychologist in California who practices with adults, couples, adolescents, and children from a psychoanalytic perspective. In my practice, I find it important to think about the whole of a person, including identity characteristics such as personal and familial aspects of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, ability, age, religion, immigration, and adoption, among other issues. I enjoy working with people with diverse identities and concerns in life. I am a candidate at The Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, CA, where I am training in contemporary psychoanalytic practices (e.g., Self Psychology, Relational Theories, and Intersubjectivity Theory among others). I think you are most likely to meaningfully learn about my therapeutic style from interactions with me, whether over the phone, by reading my writing, or by having an initial session.

In addition to practicing as a psychologist, I enjoy teaching, supervising, mentoring students in their dissertation process, and volunteering for non-profit organizations. My volunteer work has included serving as the President and Chair of Continuing Education for Wright Institute Los Angeles’s Alumni Board, where I trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and act as a faculty member and clinical supervisor to therapists in training. Additionally, for many years I helped organized the Los Angeles County Psychological Association’s psychotherapist-as-artist virtual gallery, Mirrors of the Mind.

I have a background in experimental psychology and neuroscience from Grinnell College. Before becoming a psychologist I was a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs and a business management consultant. I am passionate about philosophies of psychoanalysis, science, exploring and protecting the natural world, improvisation, expressive arts, and experiential learning.
